Say Your Name: OK, it’s Judith!

Daily Prompt: Say Your Name

Write about your first name: Are you named after someone or something? Are there any stories or associations attached to it? If you had the choice, would you rename yourself?

I was named, in 1972, after famous Australian songbird Judith Durham, of The Seekers.  She was popular at the time, my mother tells me, which is why my father took himself off to register my birth while she was still on the maternity ward – before she could get a chance to name me herself!

Here is a poem.  As you know, I am not a poet (hahaha!),  but I did enjoy this.

Ode to Moi

G’day Judith Durham,

Thanks a whole lot, mate,

I got saddled with your name,

Even though it ain’t that great.

It’s old fashioned, and it’s boring,

A nom de plume that’s non-bizarre,

But so much worse than all that is

Being named for an old pop star.

Don’t bother criticising my syllable usage, my degree was in science, not poetry 😉

  1. I loved this! I’m a 1974 Judy, and while I don’t think I am named after a particular Judith/Judy, I often felt the same: that my name was “old-fashioned and boring” especially since all my friends’ moms and aunts were named “Judy”. And now I’m off to Google Judith Durham! Thanks for this!

      1. I’m ready! I am so glad that our name brought us together! I’m looking forward to meandering through your writing! Just one question: Are you ever a Judith? (I’m not!)

  2. What an awesome poem – I love it! My name is Frances and I always disliked it. I go by Franci, which I still am not crazy about, but it is a better alternative. 😊

      1. Our cat was given to us by friends when she was 7 years old. Her breeders named her Amanda Panda so that is where I got amanpan. I like that – Franci is Fancy and I have been called Fancy Franci. 😊
